4 The Sick Prayer and Its Virtues

When a person’s body is ill, prayer might be one of the most crucial factors in his recovery. Prayer is one way to strengthen faith and tackle life’s challenges. While someone is unwell, one of the most important times to pray is while they are sick. Several prayers can be read while someone is unwell. Whether for us to read for ourselves or others. Here are four sick prayers and their virtues.

  1. The Prophet’s Prayer to Utsman bin Affan

Doa orang sakit yang dibacakan oleh Rasulullah (The Prophet’s prayer for the sick) to his friend, Utsman bin Affan, is actually quite simple and easy to memorize. The reading of the prayer of the Prophet to Ustman bin Affan and its translation:

بِسْمِ الله الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، أُعِيذُكَ بِالله الأَحَدِ الصَّمَدِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفْوًا أَحَدٌ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا تَجِدُ

“Bismillahirrahmaanirrahim, u’idzuka billah al-ahad ash-shamad alladzi lam yalid wa lam yuulad wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad min syarri maa tajid.”

Means: “Oh Allah the Most Merciful, I pray for you in the name of the One God, Who depends on Him all things, Who is neither begotten nor is anyone equal to Him, from all the evil that you meet.”

The virtue of this prayer is that Allah Almighty will give peace of mind to the sick and strengthen faith in times of difficulty. This stability can ease the burden of heavy feelings when sick. Thus, sick patients can complete the recovery and treatment process with a spacious heart.

  1. Prayer Readings When Sick

Islam encourages praying when you are sick. This prayer has excellent virtue. When we pray when we are sick, we surrender ourselves entirely to Allah Almighty and ask for healing from Him. Like the Prophet’s prayer for Aisha when his wife was sick, here is his prayer:

امْسَحْ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ بِيَدِكَ الشِّفَاءُ لَا كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

“Amsihil ba’sa rabbannaasi biyadikas syifaa’u laa kaasyifa lahu illa anta.”

Means: Take away the pain, O Rabb, in Your hands are all healing, and no one can reveal the sickness but You. (HR Buhari-Muslim)

The virtue of praying when sick is that Allah Almighty will give healing and protection to those who pray sincerely and sincerely. In addition, prayer when sick can also provide calm and strength for people who are experiencing pain or difficulty.

  1. Prayer During Treatment

Prayer for the sick can be practised while being treated. This prayer is highly recommended to be read by every Muslim who is experiencing illness and needs treatment. The virtue of this prayer is to ask for healing and protection from Allah Almighty and to increase one’s faith and devotion to Him. The following is a prayer during treatment and its virtues:

أَسْأَلُ اللهَ العَظِيمَ، رَبَّ العَرْشِ العَظِيمِ، أَنْ يَشْفِيَنِيْ

“As alullaahal ‘azhiim rabbal ‘arsyil ‘azhiim an yasyfiyaka.”

Means: “I ask Allah the Greatest, the Lord who has the great Throne, to heal me.”

This prayer is taken from the hadith narrated by Abu Daud and Tirmidhi from Abdullah bin Abu Aufa (may Allah be pleased with him). In the hadith, it is mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when visiting a sick person, said this prayer.

Reciting the ill person’s prayer while seeking treatment has many benefits, including:

  • Increase one’s loyalty and faith in Allah SWT. 
  • Develop a sense of devotion to Allah SWT.
  • Give ailing individuals a sense of tranquillity and comfort in their hearts.
  • Ask for protection from Allah SWT to avoid worse diseases.
  • Ask for healing from Allah SWT.

We are taught in Islam always to pray and rely on Allah SWT in everything, including when we are unwell and require medical treatment. As a result, prayer is one of the recommended prayers to be read by every Muslim when seeking treatment. May Allah Almighty continually grant us health and keep us close to Him.

  1. Prayer When Seriously Ill

When you are seriously ill, recite a prayer when you are very ill. This is one of the prayers that can be read when someone is experiencing severe pain. Pray for healing and protection from Allah Almighty. The virtue of this prayer is to provide spiritual strength and increase faith in the face of trials in life. Here is a prayer when seriously ill and its translation:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبْ الْبَاسَ اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

“Allahumma rabbannaasi adzhibil ba’sa isyfihi wa antas syafi laa syifaa’a illa syifaauka syifaa’an laa yughadiru saqaman.”

It means: “O Allah, the one who takes away pain, heal verily You are the One who heals, there is no healing but from Your healing, which is healing that leaves no pain” (HR. Bukhari)

The source of the prayer is found in the hadith narrated by Bukhari. The hadith explains that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this prayer to a sick friend. Therefore, the above prayer has enormous virtues and benefits in maintaining our health and faith.

Ordinances of Prayer for the Sick

Illness becomes an opportunity for a Muslim to remember the abundance of mercy that Allah Almighty gives. Of course, when you are sick, you want to get healing. If friends or family and relatives are sick and want to carry out prayers, can do the following steps:

  • Read the basmalah before praying.
  • Turn towards the Qibla.
  • Pray fervently and sincerely. 
  • Read the prayer slowly and clearly.
  • Repeat the prayer several times.

When praying while sick, one should ask for physical healing, spiritual healing, and gratitude to Allah Almighty. Friends can offer prayers for the sick, personally or with the help of others such as family and friends.

In Islam, it is very important to pray when you are sick. By praying, one completely surrenders to Allah Almighty and requests healing from Him. The Qur’an and hadith are the sources of prayer for the ill, and it is best to pray gravely and honestly. Hopefully, by praying when sick, we can get healing and protection from Allah Almighty Wallahu’alam. In addition to praying and trying, friends can also practice alms to increase goodness and reward. Hopefully, the alms we give will turn into a sin-atonement practice that mentions our suffering later.
