SOUTH SUMATRA — In order to encourage the community to be able to increase awareness and actualize clean and healthy environmental sanitation, Layanan Kesehatan Cuma-Cuma (LKC) or Free Health Service Team of Dompet Dhuafa South Sumatra carried out the Trigger of STBM or Sanitasi Total Berbasis Masyarakat (Community-Based Total Sanitation) Pillar 1 in Sukabumi Village, Cempaka District, East OKU Regency, Monday (24/7/2023).
The trigger of STBM, as defined in Permenkes No.3/2014 is a way to encourage changes in hygiene and sanitation behavior of individuals or communities on their own awareness by touching the feelings, mindsets, behaviors, and habits of individuals or communities.
The trigger of STBM in East OKU Regency was held with the theme of “Socialization and Triggering of Stop Open Defecation.” The target of this activity is people in the area and the Sukabumi Village’s Health Post, East OKU, South Sumatra who do not yet have bathrooms according to standards.
This event was motivated by the condition of bathrooms or toilets in every household in Sukabumi Village which still continues to be a problem and has not been resolved. Data shows that around 103 households spread across 5 hamlets do not yet have family bathrooms. Therefore, LKC Dompet Dhuafa South Sumatra invites people who do not have bathrooms to participate in triggering and signing a commitment to make healthy bathrooms.
“Through triggering, awareness is raised that sanitation (open defecation habits in any space) is a common problem, because it can have implications for all communities. So, the solution must also be done and solved together,” said Miki Apriani, the person in charge of Program Pemicuan STBM (STBM Triggering Program).
The triggering, which was held at the house of the Head of Sukabumi Village, was attended by nine residents who did not have bathrooms and was also attended by the Head of LKC Dompet Dhuafa South Sumatra and his team, the Village Head and Sukabumi Village government staff, religious leaders of Sukabumi Village, and Community Outreach Program students of Nurul Huda University.

“This activity aims to trigger shame, disgust, and public understanding of the impact of open defecation habits in any place. It is hoped that the holding of this activity can increase public awareness of the importance of maintaining environmental health to avoid the development of diseases caused by dirty environments and encourage the achievement of indicators of Healthy Areas Stop Open Defecation and ODF (Open Defecation Free in accordance with pillar 1 of STBM),” added Miki.
The participants were invited to commit to actualizing the intention to change behavior to be cleaner and healthier and build household sanitation facilities. (Dompet Dhuafa/Anndini)
