The practice of Al Jabbar prayer is now on the rise among Muslims. Especially for those who are “hurt”. They believe that the Al Jabbar prayer can be an intermediary to “take revenge” on the person who hurt them. Is this really the case?
The Meaning of Al Jabbar
Al Jabbar is one of the names of Allah Swt in 99 asmaul husna. The meaning of this name is the Mighty One or the Strong One. Allah swt mentions this name in the Qur’an surah Al-Hasyr:
“He is Allah, there is no God but He, the King, the Most Holy, the Most Prosperous, the One Who grants security, the One Who maintains, the Mighty, the Powerful, the Possessor of all Majesty, Glorified is Allah from what they associate.” (QS. Al-Hasyr: 23)
Quoting Tafsir As-Sa’di by Ash-Shaykh As-Sadi (may Allah have mercy on him), the meaning of the name Al Jabbar in summary is the Most High, the Compelling One, the One who repairs the heart, and the One who repairs the weak.
Thus, it is not surprising that some Muslims believe that the Al Jabbar prayer that is practiced can “send retribution” against those who have harmed. Because, in their solemn prayers, they ask the All Mighty and the All Compelling.

However, this prayer practice cannot be interpreted in a crude way to “avenge” someone to the person who hurt them. Instead, this practice will improve ourselves. This practice can be a healing tool for us to get a calm state of mind. Affairs with people who hurt us, it is the prerogative of Allah. We cannot control or force them with this practice.
Al-Harras rahimahullah said that Ibnul Qayyim rahimahullah explained the meaning of Al Jabbar, one of them:
“The essence of the meaning of Al Jabbar is to improve the condition of the slave by releasing him from hardship, and removing from him distress.”
Prayer Al Jabbar
Are Muslims encouraged to practice the Al Jabbar prayer? The answer is yes. However, not specifically only the prayer or remembrance of Al Jabbar, but all the names of Allah in 99 asmaul husna.
Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu’anhu) reported that the Prophet Muhammad said:
“Verily, Allah has ninety-nine names, aka one hundred less one. Whoever counts them will enter Paradise; He is Witr and loves the Witr.”
Based on the above hadith, Muslims are encouraged to remember and pray by mentioning the asmaul husna. Doing so will earn them rewards and forgiveness, as well as peace of mind and success in this world and the hereafter.
“To Allah belongs only the asma-ul husna, so supplicate to Him by mentioning them and leave behind those who deviate from the truth in (mentioning) His names. They will be rewarded for what they have done.” (QS. Al-A’raf: 180)
