AUK Program in Ambon, Samsia: Water Wells Are Now Closer

WESTERN SERAM, MALUKU — “Clean water is indeed half dead here. In the hamlet, there is a well, but the water is Brackish (salty), we also collect rainwater, but it can’t be drunk ‘anyway,” admitted Samsia Nurlete (39), one of the residents of Patinia Hamlet, Kawa Village, West Seram District, SBB Regency (Western Seram).

For many years, the coastal communities of Patinia Hamlet have had difficulty accessing clean water. So far, as many as 917 people (210 households) of residents there use salty water, even from the results of collecting rainwater. Despite the location has minimal rainfall, thus, some also buy clean water in distant locations quite expensively.

Samsia was met by the Dompet Dhuafa team at his residence on Tuesday (25/10/2022). In its traditional kitchen, Samsia cooks Sago, one of the typical snacks in Ambon. Barrels and buckets as containers hold water around part of the kitchen area. After school, that afternoon, her son, Rangga Tuhuteru (13), helped Samsia fetch water for her daily needs.

“If we buy (clean water) we go to the village, one hour, the price of one hundred thousand for 3 (three) days is exhausted. Thankfully now the water well is closer to home,” added Samsia.
