MAKASSAR — In the atmosphere of Language and Literature Month, Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi Branch held a book review of Matahari di Atas Rante Mario by Andi Makmur Makka at Nipah Mall, Makassar City, Thursday (24/10/2024).

This activity was held with the aim of increasing awareness of historical literacy among young people. The book review event was also prepared as a forum for the younger generation to dig deeper into the history of South Sulawesi and the struggle for Indonesian independence.

Andi Makmur Makka as the author of Matahari di Atas Rante Mario was present as a speaker, accompanied by two responders, namely Adi Suryadi Culla and Rusdin Tompo. The book tells the journey of two friends who were caught up in different political paths during the colonial and independence periods.

Nurwana, Program Manager of Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi, emphasized that this activity is a strategic step to build the spirit of literacy among the younger generation.

“We believe that literacy is an important foundation for a better future generation. Through this event, we want to equip them with historical knowledge that can strengthen their identity and love for the country,” he said.

Dompet Dhuafa itself has a strong commitment to improving literacy through five main pillars, namely economy, social, health, cultural da’wah, and education. This book review event reflects Dompet Dhuafa’s efforts to overcome the challenge of low interest in reading among youth. At the same time, it gives them a better understanding of the historical context that shapes the nation’s identity.

In his explanation, Andi Makmur Makka said that his book combines elements of fiction and nonfiction, showing the journey of two young men, Badillah and Bahar, in the struggle for independence. Although bound by friendship, they are faced with different political choices. This created a deep ideological conflict for the freedom fighters.

Through this book review, Dompet Dhuafa hopes to encourage the younger generation to value literacy more and understand the importance of history as a provision for the future.

This event not only serves as a discussion forum, but also as an inspiration for youth to continue learning and contributing to society.

We believe that by strengthening literacy, we are building a brighter future for future generations. (Dompet Dhuafa)
