Build Global Demands, Stop Israeli Violence in Palestine, Not Blame Each Other

JAKARTA – At the Dompet Dhuafa press conference titled ‘Solidarity for Palestine’ in the lobby of the Philanthropy Building, South Jakarta, on Thursday (12/10/2023), Haris Azhar stated that the most important and primary thing right now is to build global demands related to stopping violence from both sides, not blaming each other. Because if the violence doesn’t end soon, then certainly—looking back—the number of victims will continue to increase.

A human rights individual can experience various forms of violations. Sometimes the simplification of language technology and information only mentions numbers, but what actually happens in each number in that amount experiences various things.

“People sometimes don’t want to read every number in that amount, what kind of horror does he experience? Some are shot, after being shot or hit by a missile, they don’t get medical services. We don’t know how long they don’t get medical services, then what happens? We don’t know,” explained Haris Azhar.

“So through this forum, I want to say that we shouldn’t take the numbers lightly because each number consists of individual souls with dignity who experience various events. So, I want us to expand the narrative continuously that there must be a cessation of the bad situation, I am sure this will get worse,” he continued.

Secondly, he emphasized that the approach is International Humanitarian Law. There are laws about war, the goal is to humanize war.

In humanitarian law, it is regulated about things that should not be targeted in war, one of which is related to infrastructure and medical personnel. These things must be protected, including civilians. Meanwhile, what has happened in the past 5-6 days is indiscriminate attacks.

“What’s interesting is the controversy that is currently dividing the world. As if there are those who sympathize with Israel because of the attacks from Hamas and as if there are those who sympathize with Palestine. Feel free, but in my opinion, that loses the historical context. Meaning the context that has been ongoing since 1947 until today. If you ask whether the victim can resist? In legal theory, there is, in a state of compulsion or in certain circumstances, they unavoidably do various things to survive,” he asserted.

“But again, debating whether the victim can commit violence? For me, that’s not the important issue today. The important issue today is, if the victim is not allowed to commit violence, then we must stop the violence. Humanitarian law stops at finding facts, we fail to demand accountability. Israel is increasingly aggressive in its occupation. I suspect this attack will expand the occupation. From the historical infographic map of the territory, try to correlate the development of the area with each incident of attack,” explained Haris Azhar.

He also mentioned, apart from direct aid in the form of logistics, the hope is for a new intervention, namely military intervention. Because this is no longer just about the need for medicine and food. Someone is bringing this to the International Court. The question is, who will bring it? Because Israel is increasingly developing itself as an important occupation for other countries, this becomes a problem. Hopefully, Indonesia, proud of having just been elected with the most votes as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, can also be proud to bring this matter as far as Indonesia can.” (Dompet Dhuafa/Syafira/Dhika Prabowo)
