MANILA, PHILIPPINES — In Europe, there is one city that is famous as a city of canals and the beauty of its clean rivers, namely the City of Venice in Italy. Asia also has a similar city that has been transformed into a city with beautiful canals. That city is Manila in the Philippines. The canal system that exists in some parts of Manila, especially around certain districts such as Instramuros and Tondo, makes the city look like Venice.

These canals, called “esteros”, have been used since Spanish colonial times as a means of transportation and trade. While some have been degraded and even closed, others have survived and are preserved as part of the city’s historical heritage. Today, there is a beautiful jogging track on the banks of the river. Thus, many people exercise by taking a leisurely walk or a small run. In addition, the presence of the rivers that run through the city of Manila reinforces the impression of Venice.

The Pasig River, which is one of the main rivers passing through Manila, gives the city a soothing watery feel and connects different areas. The sight of historic buildings lining the banks of the river adds visual interest, reminiscent of the architecture found in European cities, such as Venice.

The nickname “Venice of the East” also reflects the relationship between the Philippines and Europe during the colonial period. Aside from its physical similarities to Venice, the nickname also highlights the Philippines’ complex historical heritage and cultural ties with Europe.

While the nickname is more metaphorical than descriptive, its use to describe certain parts of Manila shows how the city has interesting and unique characteristics. In this context, the term “Venice of the East” paints a compelling picture of Manila’s rich history and natural beauty, while demonstrating the proximity between different cultures in the world.

You can see the struggle of the indigenous people of the Philippines who were colonized for hundreds of years by the Spanish colonials. They never remain silent, as KH Ahmad Dahlan said, “calm water washes away dry leaves”.
