SURABAYA, EAST JAVA — Again mobilising kindness, Dompet Dhuafa together with e-commerce partner, Shopee Indonesia, channeled donors’ mandate in the Orphan Compensation Programme in Kampung Nelayan, Mangrove Area, Gunung Anyar Tambak District, Surabaya on Thursday (21/11/2024). A total of 42 aid packages in the form of learning support media were distributed to orphans in the village.
Kampung Nelayan in Gunung Anyar Tambak is inhabited by people with low economic levels. Most of the residents are fishermen with uncertain income. In this situation, educational needs such as stationery often become an additional burden for families, especially orphans and orphans.
As a suburban area of Surabaya close to the sea estuary, access to educational facilities is often not optimal. The distribution of school kit assistance is a step to support children to keep their enthusiasm for school and have proper equipment.
At the time of distribution, the children accompanied by their mothers were enthusiastic to take the school kit packages that had been announced to them a few days earlier. Some children were neatly dressed because they were going to continue the Quran, while others had just changed clothes after school. The school kit packages contained shoes, bags, rulers and other writing materials.
Happiness can be seen in Delisa (10) and Juna (8), the siblings who received the school kit. They grew up in a family living with limitations. Their mother works as a domestic assistant with a meagre income, while their two older siblings are already working as factory labourers and project security guards, and some are currently pursuing vocational secondary education.
‘I’m really happy, sis. I can play football again,’ said Juna briefly when receiving the school kit package. Juna’s shoes were already damaged from playing football so often.
Juna, who is currently in the second grade of elementary school, dreams of becoming a national footballer.
‘I want to be a national team player, so I can be proud of Indonesia like last night,’ Juna said during Indonesia’s match against Saudi Arabia on 19/11/2024.
Despite living in limitations, Juna and Delisa still dare to dream, because fortunately, dreaming is still free, which they can continue to do. Delisa, the older sister, dreams of becoming a policewoman.
‘So I can help uphold justice,’ she said.
