JAKARTA —Reducing disaster risk in urban areas is crucial, especially in densely populated regions like Jakarta and other major cities. Training and education on disaster risk management are necessary. High-rise buildings with dense populations are a significant focus in disaster risk management.
This is also why Tarakanita Elementary and Middle Schools in Rawamangun, Jakarta, organized Training and Education on Disaster Risk Management. This initiative targets children and school staff who play a crucial role in disaster risk management.
SD 05 and SMP 04 Tarakanita Rawamangun, under the Tarakanita Foundation, occupy an eight-story building newly constructed and inaugurated in the 2022/2023 academic year. The school’s comprehensive facilities are one indicator of providing excellent service to students and parents who trust their children’s education to Tarakanita. However, infrastructure alone is not sufficient. The school should also ensure the safety of its students, particularly from disasters.

On Tuesday-Wednesday (5–6/12/2023), Tarakanita Rawamangun School held an Initial Support for Safe Education Units from Disasters facilitated by SPAB Facilitator from FPRB DKI (Henricus MW Prasetyo) followed by an earthquake evacuation simulation for students, educators, staff, security, cleaning service, canteen managers, and FKKSKM/School Committee guided by facilitators from the Disaster Risk Reduction Forum of DKI Province, Disaster Management Center (DMC) Dompet Dhuafa, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), PMI Volunteer Corps (KSR), Menwa Rescue, and the Archdiocese of Jakarta’s Lembaga Daya Dharma (LDD KAJ).
“The training and disaster simulation activities, especially for earthquakes, aim to build awareness and knowledge from an early age. Therefore, children in schools must be equipped with disaster mitigation education so they are prepared if a disaster occurs. With approximately 1,600 students and teachers, knowledge, understanding, and quick response are necessary to reduce the risk of casualties, especially among young children,” said Achmad Lukman, Chairman of the DKI Jakarta Disaster Risk Reduction Forum.

“Safe Education Units from Disasters is one of the priority programs of the Tarakanita Foundation, in line with efforts to create Child-Friendly Schools,” Lukman added.
Lukman also expressed, “Of course, the simulation activities should not stop today but will continue. So, all school members will no longer panic and have the ability to think and act effectively on how to save themselves in case of a disaster.”
“Thank you to the LDD KAJ Team, the DKI Province Disaster Risk Reduction Forum, and other stakeholders involved in helping and supporting the training and disaster response simulation,” said P Ruliyati PL, Head of the General Bureau of the Tarakanita Foundation. (Dompet Dhuafa/DMC)
