BOGOR, WEST JAVA — As the risk of disasters increases worldwide, including in Indonesia, the urgent need for preparedness becomes more apparent. The excessive exploitation of nature contributes to the inevitable impact of climate change. In response, Dompet Dhuafa, through its Disaster Management Center, has initiated Disaster Preparedness Training for its amils. This program aims to bolster the capacity and readiness of amils to respond effectively in emergency disaster scenarios.
Held from November 29 to December 1, 2023, at Gunung Bunder, Bogor, the training spanned three days and covered a range of crucial topics. DMC experts delivered sessions on emergency disaster response tactics applicable across Indonesia, types of disasters prevalent in the region, and the topography often encountered during search and rescue operations. Additionally, the training emphasized the accurate use of vertical rescue techniques and navigating with a compass in challenging terrains. The enthusiastic participants, primarily Dompet Dhuafa amils, absorbed the knowledge with keen interest.

A highlight of the training was the disaster situation simulation conducted on the final day. Participants were immersed in a scenario requiring them to assume the roles of volunteers and disaster response officials. Their tasks included setting up a logistics kitchen, addressing victims’ trauma, and, crucially, navigating treacherous terrains to locate missing disaster victims.
Initially, participants faced challenges, particularly when confronted with a “resident” distressed and traumatized by the loss of family members during the disaster. Tasked with acting as volunteers and disaster officials, they strove to manage the resident’s mental state effectively.
The simulation also featured numerous victims, necessitating the deployment of the vertical rescue team to locate and evacuate them. The exercise concluded successfully, with all victims accounted for, logistics kitchens operational, and evacuation tents established.
Reflecting on the three-day training, Ayu Nadia from the Dompet Dhuafa Marketing Communication Team expressed her valuable takeaways, stating, “These three days have been incredibly informative. Among the many insights gained, familiarizing ourselves with various previously unseen tools, like ropes and victim transport techniques, was particularly enlightening.”
Ultimately, the Dompet Dhuafa Amil Disaster Preparedness Training serves as a foundational platform designed to cultivate individuals equipped with the skills and capabilities to act decisively in disaster scenarios and various emergencies. (Dompet Dhuafa/DMC/FZN)
