JAKARTA — Mastery in writing is a crucial skill for everyone, as it enables individuals to share beneficial insights and exert a positive influence through their creations. In the current digital age, the demand for writing skills has escalated due to the proliferation of digital platforms requiring content creation capabilities.
Aligning with this need, Dompet Dhuafa’s Community Service Institution (LPM) organized a Journalism and Literacy Training session for inmates at the Class II Jakarta Juvenile Detention Center (LPKA) on Thursday (11/1/2024). Spanning four sessions, the program kicked off with motivational talks on writing and introductions to fundamental writing skills, delivered by the Deejay Training Center.
The program saw participation from 50 inmates, ranging from junior high to high school levels, aiming to equip them with writing skills and encourage them to produce their own written works.

Mustaki, the Program Manager at LPM Dompet Dhuafa, highlighted the training’s objective to endow the inmates with both fiction and non-fiction writing skills, enabling them to craft their pieces.
“We aspire for all participants to engage in writing, be it fiction or non-fiction. History has shown that numerous notable works have been conceived under diverse circumstances and settings,” he stated.
Deejay Supriyanto, a facilitator from Dejay Training Center, stressed the significance of writing skills for the inmates, allowing them to articulate their experiences during detention through written narratives, potentially leading to inspirational publications.
“This training transcends mere knowledge acquisition; it’s also intended to equip them upon their return home, making them more productive. They could be the voices narrating their life experiences during detention, offering valuable lessons to the external world about the realities of life in detention,” Deejay remarked.
Rustikawati, the Head of Inmate Development at LPKA Jakarta, acknowledged the substantial benefits of such training for the inmates, given their productive age.
“With the support from LPM Dompet Dhuafa in organizing this training, we hope for continuity in providing further training for the inmates. At the very least, they should acquire knowledge, and ideally, apply what they have learned from these sessions,” Rustikawati conveyed.
This initiative underscores Dompet Dhuafa’s commitment to enhancing literacy and productive skills among juvenile detainees, paving the way for their positive contribution to society post-detention. (Dompet Dhuafa/LPM/Shinta/ADP)
