DEPOK, WEST JAVA — Despite Indonesia’s current phase of economic recovery following the subsidence of the Covid-19 pandemic, the reality remains that many individuals continue to face significant economic hardships. This is particularly true for those approaching their later years, for whom working at an advanced age proves to be exceedingly exhausting. Nevertheless, the need for survival compels them to persist in their labor.
Santi (41) epitomizes this predicament, as she spends her days along Margonda Road in Depok, gathering cardboard and used plastic bottles to meet her family’s financial needs.
In response to her situation, on Thursday (8/2/2024), the Public Service Institution (LPM) of Dompet Dhuafa took action by delivering basic necessity packages to Santi at her residence in Kemiri Muka, Beji District, Margonda, Depok.

“We have provided basic necessity packages to Mrs. Santi and her family, who are in need of assistance. LPM Dompet Dhuafa is committed to delivering aid three times to Mrs. Santi,” stated Cipto, a Surveyor/Program Service Staff for beneficiary services at LPM Dompet Dhuafa.
Santi’s endeavor to collect recyclables, a task she has undertaken for 15 years by scouring garbage collection spots and transporting the trash to junk dealers, is a narrative that commands the attention of all benevolent individuals. Currently, she and her two children reside in a 3 x 3 meter rental space. Additionally, she has taken on the role of stepmother to Gery (4), a child left by his parents at the age of one.

“Thanks to the donors for their support. May their ventures prosper and health be always with them. Gery has been without his parents since he was a year old. Now, the whereabouts of Gery’s parents are unknown. I bring Gery with me to work because he cries if left alone,” Santi expressed her gratitude.
Dompet Dhuafa recognizes that it cannot operate in isolation without the moral and material backing of donors and volunteers who are dedicated to fieldwork. Therefore, in our pursuit of benevolence, it is crucial that we collaborate and act collectively. It is our hope that through our united efforts, an increasing number of disadvantaged communities will benefit from our kindness. (Dompet Dhuafa/LPM)
