MOJOKERTO, EAST JAVA — A total of 7,587 residents in 3 villages at the foot of Mount Penanggungan, Mojokerto Regency, East Java, are facing a clean water crisis. This crisis makes emergency conditions due to drought disasters strengthen.
It is known that attempts to create deep wells in the region failed to be carried out due to the condition of the soil full of rocks. Now, residents depend on assistance in distributing clean water.
“This has been a problem since I was a child; clean water sources are very scarce,” explained Nawi, one of the residents who admitted that they experience difficulty supplying clean water every dry season.
Nawi and his family collect rainwater daily and store it in various shelters in every village corner.
“We store rainwater in reservoirs so that it can be used for cooking and bathing,” he said.
According to him, they must buy water from suppliers to get it during the dry season.
“We had to buy water for five thousand rupiah per jerry can and take it below,” he added.
