Dompet Dhuafa Offers a Range of Disaster Response Services to Aid and Comfort Survivors of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Eruption

EAST FLORES, EAST NUSA TENGGARA — As of Monday (15/1/2024), the ongoing eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) persists, emitting volcanic materials. Local communities have sought refuge in safer areas, with over 6,000 individuals sheltering at five evacuation sites spread across five villages.

In response, Dompet Dhuafa, through its NTT Branch, Disaster Management Center (DMC), and Corps Dai (Cordofa), has ramped up a suite of emergency services, ranging from evacuation efforts to medical aid for those affected by the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki.

The evacuees from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki are dispersed across various locations, including SDK Kemiri in Boru Village, SMPN 1 Wulanggitang in Boru Village, Cu Remaja Hokeng in Boru Village, the Wulanggitang Police Station, the Wulanggitang Military Command, as well as self-organized evacuations in Boru Village, Boru Kedang Village, Pululera Village, Hewa Village, and Nileknoheng Village.

Dompet Dhuafa has been providing continuous emergency response services to all survivors in the area from Thursday (4/1/2024) up to the present.

“In addition to maintaining operations of Public Kitchens, Warmth Posts, and Psychological First Aid (PFA), we are also planning to assess the need for emergency schooling. Furthermore, we intend to collaborate on cleaning mosques that have been impacted by volcanic ash,” stated Taqi Falsafati, Field Coordinator for the DMC Dompet Dhuafa Countermeasures Team, from the site.

“We plan to stay here for an extended period,” Taqi added.

The Dompet Dhuafa team has established Public Kitchens at the SDK Kemiri and SMPN 1 Wulanggitang evacuation sites in Boru Village, Wulanggitang, East Flores Regency, serving 1,000 individuals. Additionally, a Public Kitchen has been set up in Bokang Village, Titehena Sub-district.

Moreover, Dompet Dhuafa has organized Warmth Posts at the Konga Village Office in Titehena Sub-district, benefiting 150 individuals. Medical services have also been provided at the SDK Kemiri and SMPN 1 Wulanggitang evacuation sites in Boru Village, Wulanggitang, East Flores Regency for 59 individuals.

Furthermore, the team has facilitated Psychological First Aid (PFA) for 80 child refugees in Bokang Village and at the Konga Village Office.

Dompet Dhuafa is dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to offer comprehensive services to the survivors of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki eruption. The organization is committed to continuing its support for the survivors in NTT in accordance with the relevant Disaster Emergency Status Decree.

“We are also preparing teams and vehicles for evacuation in the event of an increase in volcanic activity,” mentioned Narwan, Emergency Response, Recovery, and Volunteering Manager.
