Dompet Dhuafa wins Indonesia’s SDGs Action Awards 2024

Penghargaan ‘Indonesia’s SDGs Action Awards 2024 - Terbaik Ketiga dalam Kategori Filantropi’ untuk program Institut Kemandirian Dompet Dhuafa.

JAKARTA — On Monday (07/10/2024), Dompet Dhuafa received an appreciation from the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), namely the Indonesia’s SDGs Action Awards 2024 ‘Third Best in the Philanthropy Category’ for the Institut Kemandirian programme. The award was presented directly by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia (VP RI) K.H. Ma’ruf Amin during the opening ceremony of the 7th SDGs Annual Conference (SAC) held at the Fairmont Hotel, Central Jakarta.

Present and directly receiving the award, Chairman of the Dompet Dhuafa Board, Ahmad Juwaini expressed gratitude and hope for the broad benefits to the community from Dompet Dhuafa’s programmes.

‘Alhamdulillah, thank you to the Vice President and Bappenas for giving appreciation to Dompet Dhuafa through the Institute of Independence programme as a programme that benefits the community, has innovation and sustainability. Hopefully with this Dompet Dhuafa can continue to develop even better activities for the wider community,’ said Ahmad Juwaini.

Quoting from the public relations page wapresri.go.id, in his remarks, the Vice President expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) as well as all ministries/agencies, local governments, representatives of the private sector, civil society, academics, and especially the younger generation who have committed to supporting the achievement of SDGs.

‘I need to remind you that the SDGs are not just about achieving targets, but about creating a more just and sustainable future,’ he said.

The Vice President emphasised the importance of accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on the development of green industry and sustainable digital innovation.

‘With the achievement of 62.5% of the SDGs targets, it means that there are still 37.5% targets that must be achieved again. I hope all parties will continue to increase their commitment and hard work to achieve all SDGs targets by 2030,’ he said.

On the occasion, he also encouraged various parties to continue to innovate in finding sources of financing for SDGs programmes. The Vice President invited the private sector and philanthropy to contribute more through blended finance.

‘In addition to the private sector, we should also explore the utilisation of various funds mandated by the people in the form of zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and waqf, which have now begun to develop and are managed more professionally, transparently, and digitally,’ he added.

The Vice President also hopes that the participants of the SDGs Annual Conference this time can formulate commitments in encouraging concrete actions to achieve sustainable development by 2030 and realise the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045.

‘Let us move forward with a new spirit, with fresh innovations, and the determination to provide the best and more meaningful changes for the Indonesian nation and the world,’ he invited.

Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas as the Coordinator of SDGs Implementation in Indonesia, the 7th SAC in 2024 carries the theme ‘Innovation Towards a Golden Indonesia: Linkages of Quality Education, Jobs, and Green Industry’. The theme and specific focus of the conference reflects the commitment to intensify inter-sectoral cooperation and increase awareness and active involvement of the public in efforts to achieve the SDGs. Through this initiative, Indonesia is committed to continuing its journey towards inclusive, sustainable and equitable development for all.

Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Suharso Monoarfa delivered a speech on ‘Progress in the Implementation of SDGs Achievement in Indonesia’. In Indonesia, increasing access to quality education is crucial. The goal is to prepare a workforce that is ready to face the current labour market and is able to adapt and innovate following the changing market dynamics. The hope of quality education is to not only open up more job opportunities but also prepare individuals to contribute significantly to sustainable economic development.

Encouraging innovation through policies and programmes that support an ecosystem of entrepreneurship, start-ups, and research and development oriented towards sustainable solutions is expected to stimulate the creation of new job opportunities and strengthen the economic base. The initiative aims to create inclusive and sustainable growth, respond to sustainability challenges with solutions that improve efficiency, promote a circular economy, and capitalise on technological innovation.

Inter-sectoral collaboration, involving governments, the business and financial sectors, educational institutions, youth communities, and civil society, is crucial. This cooperation creates an ecosystem that supports high-quality job creation and economic growth, ensuring sustainable development. The significance of collaboration lies in its ability to bring together resources and innovation, facilitate efficiency, and effectively realise common goals.

Dompet Dhuafa Institute of Independence was born with the vision of becoming the best vocational training and business incubation centre in preparing quality human resources to create an empowered society. During its 19 years of establishment, the Institute of Independence has helped the poor become more empowered with a variety of skills improvement programmes. Since its establishment in 2005 until 2022, Institut Kemandirian has graduated 6,662 alumni. Many of them have successfully become entrepreneurs or have careers thanks to the work and entrepreneurial skills they gained from the Institute.

Director of the Institute of Independence, Abdurrahman Usman who was also present at the 7th SAC, also said, ‘This is the best achievement that is certainly in its efforts to support the movement to be able to reduce unemployment and poverty in Indonesia. Yes, a synergy of relevant agencies and non-governmental organisations, this conference brings together all entities participating in the efforts to achieve the SDGs in Indonesia, and celebrates the progress that has been made, as well as disseminating the results more widely to accelerate the inclusive and accountable achievement of the SDGs. The event aims to bring about a developed and sustainable Indonesia, through a series of annual festivals, conferences and exhibitions.

With this approach, the SAC 2024 aims to build a larger and more coordinated movement, integrating efforts from various sectors and ensuring that Indonesia is on the right track towards sustainable and inclusive development. The implementation of SAC 2024 involves all SDGs stakeholders in the form of a joint discussion forum in an effort to achieve SDGs for Indonesia.

The 7th SAC activities were held for two days, 7 & 8 October 2024, in a hybrid manner (online & offline) in the form of an international conference opened by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia with an activity report submitted by the Minister of PPN / Head of Bappenas; Awarding of Indonesia’s SDGs Action Awards 2024; Panel discussions; and Parallel discussions involving the parties and inclusively.
