YOGYAKARTA – On Tuesday and Wednesday (22-23 August 2023), the Dompet Dhuafa Yogyakarta team, in collaboration with the Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Dompet Dhuafa, provided assistance to residents in the Gunung Kidul and Bantul regions of Yogyakarta to access clean water. This clean water was stored in local reservoirs for daily use.

Approximately 150 people in the Sumur Village, Giripuro, Gunung Kidul, have been facing difficulties obtaining clean water during the dry season that began in March 2023. During such times, they have had to fetch water from a spring about one kilometer away with limited water flow. Every dry season, the people of Sumur Village face water shortages and must wait for water supply assistance.

“Usually, one full reservoir in Sumur Village is only enough for the residents for about a week. This water is typically used for daily needs and livestock. The majority of Sumur’s residents work as farmers,” explained Zahron, the Head of the Dompet Dhuafa Yogyakarta branch.

A similar situation exists in Kalidadap 1 Village, Imogiri, Bantul. Over 200 people have been experiencing a lack of clean water since the dry season began in March 2023. When water is scarce, the residents have to fetch water from a spring about 600 meters away with limited water flow. The residents of Kalidadap 1 Village also face water shortages and must wait for water supply assistance.

“In Kalidadap 1 Village, one full reservoir is typically enough for residents for only three days. This water is usually used for daily needs and livestock. The majority of Kalidadap 1’s residents work as farmers and daily construction laborers,” Zahron added.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Yogyakarta has recorded more than 16 districts in its area experiencing a clean water crisis. These districts are spread across Gunung Kidul, Bantul, and Kulon Progo regencies. This situation is believed to be the result of the ongoing long dry season.
