The conversation about professional zakat or also known as income zakat is now on the rise. This is a sign that people nowadays are more aware of paying zakat. Even so, some Muslims still think that the only zakat that must be paid is zakat fitrah, which is paid in Ramadan. In fact, there are several other types of zakat that must also be paid if it has reached the nisab, one of which is income zakat.
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has also issued a fatwa that income zakat is wajib to be paid by those whose wealth has reached the nisab within a year. This is because, in addition to having a purpose for the hereafter, zakat also has an impact on social life. Zakat given by muzaki to the poor will help their lives, resulting in economic growth.
What is Zakat on Income?
Zakat on income is zakat paid by a professional worker from his salary. Everyone who works, if his salary or income has reached the nisab, then he is obliged to pay income zakat. Paying zakat must be accompanied by sincere intentions, in order to cleanse the soul of the zakat giver from the love of wealth and the world.
Why do you need to pay income zakat? Because, in the process of obtaining wealth from our profession, there may be unpleasant things that happen. Well, this zakat can clean these things and make the income we have more blessed.

How to Calculate Zakat on Income
Before paying income zakat, we need to know first how to calculate it. Dompet Dhuafa as a national amil zakat institution has provided a zakat calculator feature to make it easier for Friends who want to know whether the income earned is obligatory for zakat or not. However, if you want to know more details about how to calculate income zakat, here is the explanation.
Zakat on income has two types of nisab, which is calculated from the amount of income for one month or one year. If you want to pay income zakat only once a year, then the nisab is calculated with 85 grams of gold. If your income in a year has reached the amount of 85 grams of gold, then you are obliged to pay zakat of 2.5 percent of the amount of income.
For example, your income in a year reaches Rp120,000,000 and the price of gold in that year is Rp1,300,000 per gram. The price of one gram of gold is multiplied by 85, which is Rp110,500,000. Thus, your income has reached the nisab of 85 grams of gold, so you are obliged to pay zakat of 2.5 percent of Rp120,000,000, which is Rp3,000,000.
Meanwhile, if you want to pay income zakat once a month, then the nisab is like agricultural zakat, which is equivalent to 653 kg of grain. If your income has reached the nisab of 653 kg of grain, then you are obliged to pay zakat of 2.5 percent of the total income in one month.
For example, your total income in a month is Rp5,000,000 and the price of unhusked rice per kilogram in that year is Rp7,500. Then the price of one kilogram of unhusked rice is multiplied by 653 kg, which is Rp4,897,000. Thus, your income has reached the nisab of 653 kg of grain, so you are obliged to pay income zakat of 2.5 percent of Rp5,000,000, which is Rp125,000.
