In terminology, fidyah is a punishment in the form of a fine given to someone because he has left a religious obligation. The fine is issued by feeding the poor.
In addition, fidyah can also mean giving basic foodstuffs or prepared food to the poor and needy, as an expiation for leaving the Ramadan fast for reasons that are justified by Sharia.

The payment of fidyah can be done in three forms. The first form is by giving cooked food. The second form is by giving raw food or cooking ingredients that can be processed into cooked food. Then the third form, namely paying fidyah in the form of money which can later be spent to buy raw cooking ingredients or ready-to-eat cooked dishes.
