PADANG, SOUTH SUMATRA – Dompet Dhuafa distributed fidyah (a form of religious compensation) to 100 underprivileged families in the Padang area, West Sumatra, on Thursday (12/10/2023). This aid, consisting of basic necessity packages, was financed by fidyah funds collected through Dompet Dhuafa’s digital channels.
For this fidyah distribution, Dompet Dhuafa focused on the needy living in slum areas. A notable area of attention is a collection point for used goods in the North Padang District. This location houses dozens of underprivileged families, the majority of whom are employed in odd jobs and often accept low wages.
Pauzi Yandri, the Person In Charge of Dompet Dhuafa Singgalang’s Social Services Program, highlighted that in this area, most housewives work tirelessly as domestic cleaners. The elderly residents typically stay at home, reliant on outside support.

One of the benefit recipients, Suryati (50), a domestic cleaner, shared that her occupation does not bring in substantial income for her family. Her husband, who offers pedicab taxi services, also faces limited earnings. They are responsible for educating and providing for their four children, including a child with special needs who is enrolled in a special education school.
“I’m usually paid monthly, and the amount depends on the size of the house. It’s typically around IDR 300,000 each month. My husband operates a pedicab taxi. However, he’s been unemployed frequently lately because he struggles with using a smartphone (Android),” Suryati conveyed to the Dompet Dhuafa team.

Another focus area for the fidyah distribution was the elderly community in South Padang. Parkinah (69), a fidyah recipient, lives with her two grandchildren. Her daily life revolves around cooking at home, and she depends on contributions from her children or community assistance for her kitchen needs.
“Alhamdulillah, I am thankful for the basic necessities provided by Dompet Dhuafa’s donors,” she expressed. (Dompet Dhuafa/Muthohar)
