Food Aid from Indonesia for the Survivors of the Afghanistan Earthquake

HERAT, AFGHANISTAN – Dompet Dhuafa, through its Disaster Management Center (DMC), has once again stepped forward to extend assistance to survivors affected by natural disasters. On this occasion, the team distributed 150 food packages to 150 households, reaching over 450 individuals impacted by the Afghanistan earthquake in the villages of Karizak, Dah Marda, and Bidak Murad Kohi, in Gulran District, Herat Province, on Sunday (10/22/2023).

“We express our gratitude to Dompet Dhuafa for the trust given to us to carry out the emergency food package assistance for 150 households that were severely affected by the earthquake,” said Ali Reza Hussaini, a local volunteer partner of DMC Dompet Dhuafa.

“This mission was made possible thanks to Dompet Dhuafa’s support. May Allah (Swt) accept the efforts and reward all those who participated in this mission,” said Ali.

Local volunteers in Afghanistan shared stories from residents who survived the earthquake. These accounts included witnessing their homes collapsing, leading to injuries and loss of lives, with up to 80 aftershocks experienced.

Numerous families were affected, losing their homes and lacking the resources to rebuild or find shelter. The assistance provided was incredibly beneficial for the earthquake survivors.

“Thank you very much for the assistance,” said one of the benefit recipients.

According to an OCHA report, over 21,500 homes were completely destroyed—8,429 homes were majorly damaged in the districts of Herat, Injil, and Zindaja—and 17,088 homes were completely destroyed due to the Afghanistan earthquake, affecting around 154,000 people.

UNICEF reported that nearly 1,500 people were killed in the recent earthquake in Herat and the surrounding districts, with nearly 90 percent of the fatalities being women and children. In the three most affected districts, about 154,000 people lost their homes or suffered severe damage.
