KONAWE, SOUTHEAST SULAWESI – The Southeast Sulawesi branch of Dompet Dhuafa, in partnership with the Disaster Management Center (DMC), organized the Youth Inclusive Camp (YIC). This event was held at Villa La Familia Tapulaga, Tapulaga Village, Soropia, Konawe Regency, over two days, from Thursday to Friday (12—13/10/2023).
The Youth Inclusive Camp (YIC) was held to commemorate Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Month 2023, observed from 10th to 14th October 2023. During the event, participants of all ages came together to learn, interact, and grow. The participants were students from SLB ABC Mandara in West Kendari.
At YIC, participants had the opportunity to visit local schools, participate in enjoyable activities, and engage in disaster mitigation education. For example, they received training on how to extinguish small-scale fires.
“Today, I learned how to extinguish a fire and am interested in learning more about disaster management,” explained Ahmad Fahri, using sign language.
Additionally, the event included a waste management workshop conducted by Setiawan from Nature Evolution, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. Participants also learned sign language for communication with the deaf community, guided by Ade Anggari from Gerkatin Kendari, and discussed communication ethics and interactions with people with disabilities, presented by Kasihan from Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) and Kafarudin, NPC of Southeast Sulawesi.
Moreover, participants received motivation and tips on developing their potential to become key players in the creative economy, led by Sasmita Sugiardi, Chairperson of HIPMI Kendari. The event concluded with a screening of the inspirational film “Tegar” (2022).

“Appreciating DMC Dompet Dhuafa for building resilience in inclusion, I welcome this initiative. Disaster management is a collective responsibility without boundaries. Everyone should be aware and understand disaster risk reduction as it’s a crucial part of mitigation efforts. By facing disasters, they become more resilient,” said Prasinta Dewi, Deputy for Prevention at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), after attending the opening of YIC on Thursday (12/10/2023).
According to Kompas, data from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) shows that people with disabilities in Asia Pacific are 2—4 times more likely to die during disasters compared to non-disabled individuals. The number of people with disabilities in the Asia Pacific region is estimated to be around 700 million.
“Youth Inclusive Camp is a movement with a strong goal to create a more compassionate and inclusive society in Indonesia. This activity is a symbol of hope, connecting people with disabilities and those without,” said Desi Edian Sari, staff of Community Resilience and Advocacy (CRA) at DMC Dompet Dhuafa.
