JAKARTA — Through data from the Global Humanitarian Overview 2022, the United Nations (UN) states that nearly a quarter of a million people in Somalia face hunger issues as the drought season worsens and global food prices are near record highs. Without humanitarian assistance, about 3.5 million Somalis are predicted to face acute food insecurity.
This problem prompted Dompet Dhuafa to carry out the Stocking of Sacrificial Animals or Tebar Hewan Kurban (THK) in Somalia on Eid al-Adha 1444 H/2023 A.D., which was carried out in previous years. Thanks to the kindness of donors, in 2022, precisely on Sunday (10/7/2022), Dompet Dhuafa managed to slaughter 11 cows and distribute the meat to residents in the refugee settlement in Baidoa, Somalia.
Abdirahman Abdirisak as Executive Director of Tadamun Social Society (TASS), Dompet Dhuafa’s social partner, said that the THK Dompet Dhuafa program has made families affected by drought and low-income on Eid al-adha. THK 1443 H has reached hundreds of poor families in Somali refugee camps who depend only on the help of others. Of the hundreds of families, 3,254 beneficiaries received sacrificial meat.

A widow, Nasro Ahmed Artan (45) and her 6 young children became beneficiaries of THK sacrificial meat. Nasro said he was happy to have received the sacrificial meat. He explained that sacrificial meat was the first meat food his family had obtained since 8 months in the refugee camp. They eat some meat and make it as Oodkac (traditionally cured meat).
“First, thank Allah, and then I thank Dompet Dhuafa and the people of Indonesia. You are our real Brother. Thank you for this gift of meat. My children and I were thrilled and this meat came in a situation where we felt the need for meat. May Allah have mercy on our brothers from Indonesia,” he said.
Nasro said he was displaced from a village located 50 km north of Baidoa because of drought in his area. Before the drought, his young family owned wheat and corn fields as well as 50 goats and 10 cows. Unfortunately, the drought left none and closed all sources of income, leaving his family in poverty.

To ensure his family’s survival, Nasro had to walk for 5 days in a donkey cart carrying children on his back. He did this merely to seek relief and protection from the looming drought and famine.
Nasro reflected on the situation, saying softly, “We sometimes have nothing to eat and children cry for hours, but I have nothing to give them.”
Upon arrival at the refugee settlement, Nasro had to build temporary shelters out of materials such as cartoons and plastic bags. Unfortunately, due to the large number of people displaced by the drought, there is not enough assistance for drought-affected people living on one meal per day. Sometimes, they go for several days without eating.

“In THK 2023, Dompet Dhuafa will again hold it among Somali citizens. Somalia is one of the targets of THK distribution because its citizens are experiencing a high food crisis and humanitarian crisis, while they are also the majority of our Muslim brothers,” said Mariatul Kibtiah as Chairman of THK 1444 H.
In addition to Somalia, other countries targeted for THK distribution abroad are Palestine, Turkey, Syria, and Myanmar.
