Response to South Aceh Floods: Dompet Dhuafa Initiates Nutrition Posts and Clean Water Supply

SOUTH ACEH, ACEH — The aftermath of the flash floods in Ladang Rimba Village, Central Trumon District, South Aceh Regency, sees ongoing efforts. Dompet Dhuafa’s Disaster Management Center (DMC), via its Aceh branch, has promptly responded to aid the affected community.

Following the local government’s declaration of an emergency response period from November 20 to December 14, 2023, Dompet Dhuafa established a relief post operational since December 7, 2023. The team has been in close coordination with the central post of South Aceh’s BPBD to ensure the daily provision of clean water to the community.

Nuzul Ramadhan, the team leader, shared that initial assessments conducted with local volunteers, who have been on-site since the disaster’s onset, revealed an urgent need for clean water among the residents. Their usual water sources were compromised due to the flash floods’ destruction.

Based on these findings, the DMC team strategized to supply clean water and to set up a central Dompet Dhuafa post, incorporating a warmth corner and a toddler nutrition station. This post also acts as a coordination hub for local volunteers to organize clean-up efforts for houses and public amenities affected by the flash floods.

“We ensure full coordination with the pertinent authorities, BPBD, Muspika Camat, and the local village head for the implementation of these activities. Consequently, the team secured a site to establish the central Dompet Dhuafa post,” Nuzul elaborated.

On the inaugural day, the team managed to distribute a tanker of clean water. By the following day, they had provided 300 ready-to-eat rice packets, maintained the warmth corner, and participated in the clean-up of residents’ homes. These initiatives are ongoing.

Furthermore, the volunteers have liaised with the Village Head and local Posyandu Cadres to roll out toddler nutrition post activities. The DMC Volunteer Team received additional support from student associations SEMMI and HMI South Aceh during these endeavors.

“We empathize deeply with the hardships endured by the inhabitants of Ladang Rimba Village. We hope our presence here can somewhat ease their plight. Our prayers are with them for a swift recovery from this calamity,” Nuzul added.(Dompet Dhuafa / Aceh / Muthohar)
