HATAY, TURKIYE — The sad news we hear again from Turkey. In the South Turkey region, an aftershock of 6.3 M shook on Tuesday (21/02/2023). Citing CNBC, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), this earthquake hit Hatay province adjacent to Syria. This time, the epicentre was in Defne, and it was said that there had been 26 aftershocks since Monday (6/02/2023).
Narwan, the Manager of the Response & Recovery Disaster Management Center (DMC), who is currently on duty on a humanitarian mission in Turkey, reported directly from the scene regarding this incident.
“There was an earthquake around eight to half past nine Turkish times. The shock is huge around Hatay, Gaziantep, and surrounding areas. It is not yet known where the epicentre is, but it was felt once in the building. The earthquake begins with a light failure (electricity), when the lights go off, the shaking is very large. Then the residents and those of us in the building immediately came out to save themselves,” Narwan said, which was posted on his Instagram account @dmcdompetdhuafa.
The panic caused by the aftershocks in the city traumatized residents to re-enter their homes. Even Narwan and some other volunteers came out barefoot and in jackets. He also said that the situation was very cold and tense. “Please pray for us to be given salvation,” Narwan added.
