The 1000 Teachers Reading Books Aloud Movement

RIAU — To intensify the spirit of reading, Sekolah Literasi Indonesia (SLI) Dompet Dhuafa held a movement of 1000 teachers reading books aloud throughout Indragiri Hilir Regency. This online activity is included in a series of commemorations of International Literacy Day on Friday (8/9/2023).

Shirli Gumilang, SLI Manager, explained that the 1000 Teachers Read Out Loud Movement came from the spirit of grounding literacy on International Literacy Day.

“We realize that big changes are born from small habits, and these habits need to be sparked by inspiration,” she explained.

SLI as a literacy culture development program in Indonesia is committed to mobilizing and increasing interest in reading massively by inviting literacy activists to be involved in this activity. The event was also attended by H. Muhammad Wardan as the Head of the Indragiri Hilir District Education Office and Hj. Zulaikha Wardan as the Literacy Mother of Indragiri Hilir District.

The big goal of the 1000 Teachers Read Books Aloud Movement, Shirli added, is to teach teachers effective techniques for reading books aloud while strengthening the view of teachers as literacy role models.

“Not only that, we also want to inspire the habit of reading books by teachers so that students’ interest in reading is encouraged and build the enthusiasm of teachers to read aloud as a learning method,” he concluded.

The 1000 Teachers Reading Books Aloud Movement was attended by thousands of teachers throughout Indragiri Hilir Regency.
