Definition of Tahajud Prayer

Linguistically, the word tahajud comes from ‘hujud’, which means to sleep. Tahajud means to try to resist or leave sleep. On the other hand, in terms of fiqh, tahajud means the nighttime Sunnah performed after sleep. According to ijma’ Ulama, the law of tahajud prayer is sunnah muakkad. The Sunnah is highly suggested because the Holy Prophet always practised it.

Virtues of Tahajud Prayer

Tahajud prayer is worship that has virtues. As Allah Almighty has said in the Qur’an Sura al-Isra verse 79, “And from some nights of prayer tahajud you (Muhammad) by reciting the Qur’an (in it) as an additional worship for you, may your Lord place you in a praiseworthy place.” (QS al-Isra: 79).

Allah also says in Surah Al-Muzammil verse 20, “Verily your Lord knows that you stand (pray) less than two-thirds of the night, or one-second of the night or one-third and (likewise) a class of those who are with you. And God ordained the measure of night and day. Allah knows that you cannot determine the limits of those times, so He gives you leniency, so read what is easy (for you) from the Quran.

He knows that there will be among you the sick and those who walk the earth seeking some of the gifts of God, and others are fighting in the way of Allah, so read what is easy (for you) from the Qur’an and establish prayers, pay obligation charity (zakat) and give loans to Allah good loans. And whatever good you do for yourselves, you will get (retribution) in the sight of Allah as the best and greatest reward. And ask God for forgiveness; indeed, Allah is merciful.” (QS. Al-Muzammil: 20).

Narrated by Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah, he said: “You continue to qiyâmyul lail (by performing the Tahajud prayer), for it was the custom of the people before you. Qiyâmul lail (by performing the Tahajud prayer) is your worship to your Lord, melting wrong things and preventing sin” (HR al-Hakim).

Golden Opportunity to Get Closer to Allah SWT.

From the postulates of the Quran and Hadith above, we can understand that the tahajud prayer is a worship with virtues. At night, Allah sends down His mercy and blessings. An opportunity for us to maximise ourselves in prayer and recitation of the tahajud prayer. An opportunity for us to get closer to Allah Almighty.

Procedures, Intentions, and Recitations of Tahajud Prayer

Routinely performing tahajud prayers, InshaAllah, will bring us blessings in the world and hereafter. Tahajud worship can be carried out after waking up at night. The best time is during the third of the night. One prayer is performed in as many as two cycles (rakat). Tahajud prayers can be performed repeatedly; there is no limit to the cycle (rakat) to be performed. However, it would be nice every day that we took the time to pray tahajud every day for at least two cycles (rakat).

Procedures and Intentions of Tahajud Prayer

Implementing the tahajud prayer is the same as the obligatory prayer and other daily sunnah prayers. The procedure for performing the first tahajud prayer is reading the intention of the tahajud prayer.

أُصَلِّيْ سُنَّةَ التَهَجُّدِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى

Ushallî sunnatat tahajjudi rak‘ataini lillâhi ta‘âlâ.

It means, “I pray the sunnah of Tahajud two cycles (raka’ats) because of Allah Almighty.”

 After reading the intention:

  • Perform opening by saying “Alloh Akbar” (takbiratul ihram), iftitah prayer, surah al-Fatihah and additional suras from the Quran, ruku, itidal, and prostration.
  • Repeat the movement like the first movement.
  • Recite the final tahiyat prayer on the second rakaat.
  • Say the salutation.

Recitation of Tahajud Prayer Recited After Prayer

The tahajud prayer is performed like the obligatory five daily prayers. After finishing the greeting as a marker of the end of the prayer, we can say the following tahajud prayer reading:

Latin reading:

Wa lakal hamdu anta nûrus samâwâti wal ardhi wa man fî hinna. Wa lakal hamdu antal haqq. Wa wa‘dukal haqq. Wa liqâ’uka haqq. Wa qauluka haqq. Wal jannatu haqq. Wan nâru haqq. Wan nabiyyûna haqq. Means:

“O Allah, our Lord, praise be to thee, You the enforcer of the heavens, the earth, and the creatures in them. Praise be to You. You are the ruler of the heavens, the earth, and the creatures in them. Praise be to You, the light of the heavens, the earth, and the creatures in them. Praise be to You. You are True. Your promise is true. The meeting with you will be actual. Your word is accurate. Heaven is real. Hell is so. The prophets were right. Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad was right. Doomsday is true.

O my Lord, only to Thee I surrender. Only in You do I have faith. To you, I surrender. Only to Thee do I return. Because of You, I am willing to fight. It is only on You that my verdict is based. Therefore, forgive my past and past sins, sins that I hide and which I reveal, and other sins that You know better than I do. You are the Former, and You the Future. There is no God but You. There is no effort and strength other than God’s help.

Best Time to Perform Tahajud Prayer

The time of one-third of the night is divided into three. The first time is from 21.00 to 23.00. The second time of the night is from 23:00 to 01:00. The third time is from 01.00 in the morning until dawn. The best time to perform the tahajud prayer is during the last third of the night. That is from 01.00 until before entering dawn time. The choice of this most critical time is based on the Hadith Narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, which reads:

“Every night Allah Almighty descends into the world’s sky until the last third of the night is left. He (Allah) said, “Is my servant asking for what I ask him to do? Is my servant who prays until I grant his prayer? Is it my servant who begs (istighfar) until I forgive his sins?”
