JAKARTA — The United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO) said that Indonesia is second from the bottom regarding literacy. According to UNESCO data, Indonesian people’s interest in reading is alarming, which is only 0.001 per cent. This means that out of 1,000 Indonesians, there is only 1 person who reads avidly.
Meanwhile, research from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2018 showed that Indonesia ranked 71st out of 77 countries, or the bottom 10 countries with low literacy levels.
Seeing this phenomenon, Dompet Dhuafa tries to increase social impact and community welfare. These efforts certainly require synergy and commitment from various parties. This involves the development of targeted programmes, collaboration with various strategic partners, and active participation from all elements of society. Thus, it can reduce social inequality and encourage the creation of a better life for all levels of society.

One of the ways, Dompet Dhuafa has established strategic partnerships, including collaboration with PT Info Media Digital (Tempo). One of the concrete manifestations of this collaboration is the Tempo Berbagi Ramadan 1445 H Programme, which took place in Ramadan 1445 H with a campaign period from 27 March to 31 May 2024.
The collaboration scheme involved the public or new Tempo subscribers, through the Tempo Premium package for 12 months for only Rp200,000. From this scheme, donations were collected in the form of infaq. The Tempo Berbagi Subscription Programme deducts 25 per cent of the customer’s payment from every transaction on Tempo Digital services.
As of 30 July 2024, IDR 12,882,883 has been collected. These funds will be distributed to the Book and Literacy Assistance Programme for Children. The donation from Tempo customers was symbolically handed over at the Dompet Dhuafa Philanthropy Building, South Jakarta, on 31 July 2024.
‘So that by becoming a new customer, at the same time giving alms. In the momentum of Ramadan, we want our customers to be able to do charity at the same time,’ said Robby Ilyasa, Tempo’s Marketing Specialist.
Later, the distribution of Books and Literacy for Children will be distributed in two schools in Bogor Regency. Furthermore, Edgar Putro Pratomo as Tempo’s Digital Subscription Manager, revealed that Dompet Dhuafa shares the same vision as Tempo.
‘Maybe the reason is in line with Tempo’s vision and mission to increase literacy and interest in reading, because the majority of Tempo’s media is written, so this can be in line between Tempo and Dompet Dhuafa,’ said Edgar.
Tempo also continues to be committed to improving the lives of the Indonesian people. In addition to the donation handover, Tempo and Dompet Dhuafa also discussed further collaboration plans, for the sake of wider benefits.
‘In the future, we will develop the collaboration plan so that the reach is wider, the programme is wider. Hopefully, we can synergise with each other, in goodness. Hopefully our assistance can be useful for the children there, and can improve their standard of living there,’ added Edgar.
Meanwhile, Utammi Sri Lestari, Senior Officer Partnership Dompet Dhuafa, appreciated the good synergy between Dompet Dhuafa and Tempo media. The hope is that this collaboration can open wider opportunities and provide the widest possible benefits.
‘Hopefully, with this collaboration with Tempo, it can expand the message related to the empowerment of literacy education, especially for children and open many other good opportunities inspired by the initiatives that have been initiated by Tempo and Dompet Dhuafa,’ said Utammi. (Dompet Dhuafa)
