PACITAN, EAST JAVA — Most people use the Eid moment to stay in touch as well as vacation. The beach is also one of the favourite tourist destinations during Eid. Unwinding by playing with water while taking selfies with family is often the main goal.

But in fact, not all beaches are friendly to be used as a place to play water or bathe. Because, the waves’ magnitude and the sea’s depth vary. So, there is a possibility that the waves are life-threatening to tourists who do not comply with the rules.

To prevent unwanted incidents, the role of the lifeguard becomes very vital. As Agus and Rio run, guarding the safety of tourists at Soge Beach, Pacitan, East Java. Both of their eyes must continue to be alert and alert to provide warnings as well as education to tourists who are desperate to enter dangerous areas.

“We have posted appeals everywhere. But tourists if they are too cool to play on the beach, sometimes like to forget and miss playing water. Even though here the waves are quite big and certainly vulnerable if you are not careful,” explained Rio, one of the DMC Dompet Dhuafa volunteers who is the lifeguard of Soge Beach, Pacitan.

During the Eid holiday, the lifeguard team works extra hours. The reason is, the number of tourists visiting Soge Beach is increasing. So, since the moment of the homecoming flow, Agus, Rio, and their friends have started to guard extra there.

Rio and his friends have been active as lifeguards for Soge Beach since 2020. Precisely since the beach went viral and began to be visited by tourists. But far from that, Rio, Agus, and their friends have been active in the environment initiating coastal abrasion handling and disaster risk reduction with the Dompet Dhuafa Disaster Management Center (DMC) team. Mangrove planting, making educational videos related to tsunamis, and several other environmental activities continue to have collaborated.

“First, collaboration with Dompet Dhuafa in disaster risk reduction programs. Then continue mitigating mangrove planting in minimizing abrasion,” concluded Rio. (Dompet Dhuafa/Taufan YN)
