Together with the Santri of Dompet Dhuafa’s Mualaf Pesantren, Chef Amanda Spreads Sacrificial Animals to Bali

JEMBRANA, BALI — In addition to fulfilling religious laws, Eid al-Adha can be a moment to bring people closer together. Sometimes, by sharing, we can erase the barriers of differences. One such story comes from the island of Bali. On Tuesday (6/18/2024), Chef Amanda and the Dompet Dhuafa team distributed qurbani meat in Tegal Badeng Timur Village, Negara District, Jembrana Regency, Bali.

After traveling for approximately one hour from Banyuwangi Regency, Chef Amanda finally arrived at the Indonesian Mualaf Pesantren Dompet Dhuafa Bali Branch, Jembrana, Bali. The Mualaf Islamic Boarding School is one of the Dompet Dhuafa Dai Corps (Cordofa) Programs.

The slaughter was held in the backyard of the Muslim Boarding School. After slaughtering five doka, Chef Amanda invited the converts to cook a typical Tegal Badeng Timur village dish. A total of 16 students and local residents helped, starting from the slaughtering procession to cooking. There were smiles on the faces of the students, who were mostly in their twilight years.

“After slaughtering 5 doka tails, some were distributed to local residents and to the converts here. Later I will cook according to the recommendations of the students here, namely satai and their specialty menu, Tim. Tim is like curry but without coconut milk,” explained Chef Amanda.

The average resident of Tegal Badeng Timur Village works as a laborer in a fish preservation company there. In addition to being a base for religious activities for Muslim residents, the presence of the Mualaf Islamic Boarding School has gradually begun to empower the students and the community. This pesantren has a Mualafpreneur Program, which is the empowerment of laying hens. One of the local residents, Niluh (42) is a beneficiary, namely as an egg reseller from the program.

Not only preparing Eid al-Adha dishes for the students, Chef Amanda also continued to distribute qurbani meat to local residents. Not only distributing meat to those who celebrate Eid al-Adha, Chef Amanda and Dompet Dhuafa also distributed meat to non-Muslim residents.
