SYRIA — United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling on the international community or citizens of the world to provide more and more aid to the victims of Turkey and Syrian earthquakes.

The UN also stressed that right now, Syria needs more help. The reason is now that access to areas in earthquake-stricken Syria is quite difficult and can only be passed through one route.

“Another assistance is now on the way, but we still need more and more assistance besides this,” said the UN Secretary-General after the first UN Aid Convoy, quoted from Al-Jazeera, Friday (10/2/2023).

Antonio Guterres said that next week, the UN would launch an international call to gather aid from around the world for survivors of the Turkey and Syrian earthquakes.

“People (earthquake victims) are now facing nightmares on top of nightmares,” the UN Secretary-General added.

It is known that currently, Syria is indeed under international sanctions. However, Guterres insisted that the sanctions would not affect humanitarian aid to Syria.

Access to Syria Is Difficult

Program Pangan Dunia (WFP) says it is running out of food stocks in Northwest Syria, an area controlled by the opposition. To that end, the WFP is calling for more corridors between Syria and Turkey to be opened.

“We’ve reached out to people there, but we need to replenish our inventory,” said Corinne Fleischer, WFP Regional Director of the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe.

“We are out of stock and we need access to bring in new stock. Currently, border crossings are open, but we need to open new border crossings,” he added.

Turkey’s conditions after the earthquake occurred.

Currently, the UN has only one crossing approved by the two countries, namely the Bab al-Eve Border. On Thursday (9/2/2023), the UN said that their first aid convoy had been delayed in Syria due to damage to the country’s crossing.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Government said it had allowed the aid distribution to pass through two additional crossings. However, UN officials say Bab al-Hawa remains the only viable route.

Although we cannot help our brothers and sisters in Turkey and Syria who are facing catastrophic disasters from Allah Swt, we can still provide other assistance in the form of materials or logistics and solemn prayers to ease their burdens. May Allah Swt always protect and strengthen our brothers and sisters amid calamity. Aamin.
